John Murray states that baptism as instituted by Christ should be distinguished from the baptism of John the Baptist. He also sees the baptism mentioned in John 3:22, 26 and John 4:1-2 as a forerunner to the baptism instituted by Christ in Matthew 28:19.

Murray further notes the importance of the baptismal formula, that it indicates unity with God. For Murray, the governing idea is that baptism signifies union with Christ.
