This article is a review of the important "The Mission of God" of Chris Wright. In his book Wright himself offers a point at which his own work might be assessed when he writes: "I would ask that the missional framework I propose in this volume be evaluated for its heuristic fruitfulness. Does it in fact do justice to the overall thrust of the biblical canon? Does it illuminate and clarify? Does it offer a way of articulating the coherence of the Bible’s overarching message?". That challenge is taken up by working out answers to these questions. First of all it is asked whether Wright has articulated the concept of "mission" with enough clarity that it is a candidate to be the theme to guide biblical interpretation. Secondly, it is explored whether Wright has given a convincing account of the relationship between the Old and New Testaments, and the difference between Israel and the Church. Thirdly, it is examined whether Wright has given an enlightening description of the distinction between evangelism and social action.
