1 Timothy 2:15 – Ascertaining Women's God-Ordained Roles

1 Timothy 2:15 – Ascertaining Women's God-Ordained Roles

  • Technical
  • Andreas J. Köstenberger

This article offers a detailed exegesis on 1 Timothy 2:15. The focus is narrowed to the three component parts of the expression "saved by childbearing." It discusses (1) the meaning of “be saved” or “be preserved” in 2:15; (2) the preposition "dia" (“by” or “through”) in the present context; and (3) the meaning of “childbearing” literally or as synecdoche for a woman’s “domestic calling.” Kostenberger first presents a survey of the history of the interpretation of the present passage, focusing on patristic, Reformation, and modern writers. Based on this survey, he discusses the phrase “saved by childbearing,” considering also possible references to Genesis 3:15 or 16. The essay concludes with a brief effort to integrate the interpretation of 1 Timothy 2:15 into a coherent reading of 2:9–15.
