The Prophetic Voice of Amos as a Paradigm for Christians in the Public Square

The Prophetic Voice of Amos as a Paradigm for Christians in the Public Square

  • Semi-Technical
  • Gerald A. Klingbeil, Hendrik De Cock

How should Christians conduct themselves in the public square? This article focuses upon the Old Testament prophet Amos, and his life, mission, and message and its relevance for Christians in the public square. The author first introduces the concept of the public square and then make use of relevant biographical, geographical and historical facts that are helpful to understand Amos’ prophetic voice in the public square. The article notes the international context of Amos 1 and Amos 2, the conflict in Amos 5:21-27, and the five visions of judgment in Amos 7-Amos 9. In the final place, the author notes the word of hope with which Amos leaves the public square in Amos 9.

It is important to remember that culture does not give the church its agenda. All it gives the church is its context. The church’s belief and mission come from the Word of God. David F. Wells
