Natural Revelation and the Purpose of the Law in Romans

Natural Revelation and the Purpose of the Law in Romans

  • Semi-Technical
  • Mark A. Seifrid

This article believes that it is impossible to treat Paul’s understanding of the law of Moses rightly apart from at least some discussion of "natural revelation" in Paul’s letter to the Romans. The author believes that the two themes are linked in Romans 2:12-16 in such a way that the interpretation of one affects the interpretation of the other. The aim of the article is to follow the basic lines of Paul’s argument in Romans 1-Romans 3. It wants to indicate the relation between the two themes, thus highlighting the distinctive function of the law of Moses according to Paul.
