Brief Survey on the Controversy on Universal Grace (1634–1661)

  • Roger R. Nicole

What was the Amyraut controversy? This controversy is associated with teachings on universal grace that flared up in the Reformed churches of the seventeenth century. Nicole provides a brief survey of the major developments in this controversy and follows this up with a summary of the most important arguments advanced by both sides. Amyraut published a work on predestination that lead to unrest in the Reformed churches in France. The Synod of Alençon evaluated the arguments for and against Amyraldianism. Nicole presents an overview of the influence of Amyraldianism particularly in Europe.
