Matthew 5:7–9

Read: Matthew 5:1–10

Are you merciful? Are you pure in heart, a peacemaker? What does it even mean to be these things? Jesus tells us that as his forgiven children we should be these things.

To be merciful means to be forgiving of others, to be caring and kind. So, when you are angry at your friend who has just said something very nasty to you, don’t respond in anger, but remember how many times you have said the wrong thing to others. Remember that you are forgiven by God. Remember that God is willing to forgive your friend, and so you must be willing to forgive your friend as well. You can’t do this in your own strength. From yourself you would just want to remain angry, but through the power of God working in you, God will give you the mercy you need to show this love and forgiveness.

Being pure in heart means you want to serve God completely — with your whole life. Happiness isn’t the most important thing for you, but God is. So, don’t try and find happiness in toys, videos, friends, games or sport. Don’t try and be the most popular person, but focus on serving the Lord. If you are focused on serving the Lord and finding your happiness in him, you can wake up in the morning as a joyful person. God has cleansed your heart and will help you serve him throughout the day. Begin your day by reading from the Bible. Listen to God’s words to you. Pray to the Lord and ask him to give you a pure heart, and then go about your day.

As a peacemaker you will not try to argue with people but will be willing to make peace. You will pray for those who do wrong things to you. You will want to sort through arguments with others and forgive each other.

As children of God’s kingdom, he will help you live in this way.
