Job 38:4
Job 38:4
Read: Job 38:1-11
Job’s world changed overnight. You can imagine him sitting down having breakfast when the first bit of information came to him. His servants were dead. Then he was told about the fire that destroyed his sheep, the Chaldeans who stole his camels and that all his children died together in one house. How terrible it must have been for Job. Job wanted to understand why this all happened to him. He wanted answers.
You may wonder the same sometimes in your life. Why did God send COVID-19 to upset the whole world? Why did my grandparents have to leave the area? Why do I struggle so much with my schoolwork? Why hasn’t the Lord given me any brothers or sisters? Why?
When Job was wondering why, the Lord came and spoke to him. The Lord asked Job a lot of questions. These questions are called rhetorical questions. Rhetorical questions are questions that have a very obvious answer. Everybody knows the answer, so they don’t really need to be answered.
God asked Job, “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? (38:4). “Were you there, Job? Do you know how I did it?” “Have you commanded the morning since your days began?” (38:12). In other words, “Job, is it you who makes the sun come up every morning?” The Lord asked Job many questions like this to show Job that God is God. He is the One who made the whole world, and he is the One who still has everything in his control.
So, when you are wondering why God allows certain things to happen, you too need to be reminded that God is God. He is in control of everything. Walk outside and see the sun shining. Who made it shine today? Listen to the birds singing. Who made them sing so beautifully? Look at worms digging in the garden? Who made these amazing creatures? Yes, God did! He is God, even when things are difficult for you.
Always remember that, and be at peace knowing that God is God!
Reflection with your child:
What are some other things in creation that show you that God is still God today?
