1 Timothy 2:8-15 - The Mission-Lifestyle Setting

  • Semi-Technical
  • Royce Gordon Gruenler

The focus of this article is the critical point in Paul’s use of the creation/fall/promise theme in 1 Timothy 2:13–15. The apostle's argument is based on Genesis 1-3 and should be read as part of the unit of 1 Timothy 2:8-15. Gruenler argues that this forms part of the larger context of the Pastorals as a mission genre with a specific exhortation to effective Christian lifestyle.

Augustine on Christ’s second coming: “That day lies hid, that every day we may be on the watch.... He who loves the coming of the Lord is not he who affirms that it is far off, nor is it he who says that it is near; but rather he who, whether it be far off or near, awaits it with sincere faith, steadfast hope, and fervent love.” Augustine
