The question of Anselm, "Why did God become man?" is not answered in a uniform way by Evangelical Christians. There used to be more of a consensus, more so than there is today. What did the atonement actually accomplish? There are basically four views held by Protestants. The "moral influence theory", the "governmental theory", the "Christus Victor" view and finally the "sacrifice/satisfaction" theory of the atonement that has been at the heart of historic Protestantism. In this dialog between Michael Horton and Clark Pinnock the different views are presented and evaluated.
