The Servant of the Lord in the Teaching of Jesus

The Servant of the Lord in the Teaching of Jesus

  • Semi-Technical
  • R. T. France

Did Jesus see himself as the servant referred to in Isaiah 53? This understanding of Jesus' view of his mission has come under attack. This article concerns itself with a response to the work of C. F. D. Moule, C. K. Barrett, and Morna Hooker who are all critical of the view that finds Jesus' self-understanding steeped in Isaiah 53. France deals with the one formal quotation of Isaiah 53 attributed to Jesus in Luke 22:37, and allusions thereto in Mark 10:45, Mark 14:24, and Luke 22:25-27. He then comments on other possible allusions. Finally, he considers the numerous predictions of Jesus' suffering that are commonly regarded as based on Isaiah 53.
