Was it compulsory for the earliest Christians in the book of Acts to share their possessions? This article considers this question in the light of passages like Acts 2:44-45 and Acts 4:32-35, which speak of sharing of possessions among the earliest believers. This article is a response to the view that Luke presents this practice as mistaken. The author puts forward what the first believers actually did by considering a number of passages, including Acts 4:36, Acts 5:11, and Acts 6:1-6, showing that while there was a remarkable readiness among the believers to share with those in need, there was no compulsion about this. Rather, the principle of holding possessions lightly as God's stewards guided the practice, and this principle also underpins later almsgiving among Christians, reported in Acts.
