The Benefits of an Author-Oriented Approach to Hermeneutics

The Benefits of an Author-Oriented Approach to Hermeneutics

  • Semi-Technical
  • Robert H. Stein

Stein argues in this paper that in a communication process, meaning is determined by the author. He acknowledges his debt to E. D. Hirsch Jr. and his book Validity in Interpretation. Stein provides an extended argument for author-determined meaning. Clarifying of the terms used by Stein is provided by way of a discussion of four terms, i.e., meaning, implications, significance, and subject matter. He further expands on advantages of author-determined meaning.
