Revelation 20:1-6 - Genre and Hermeneutics

Revelation 20:1-6 - Genre and Hermeneutics

  • Semi-Technical
  • Vern S. Poythress

What type of literature is Revelation 20:1-6? The decision about the literary genre of this chapter is one of the most crucial factors in its exegesis and interpretation. Is this chapter a simple report concerning the future, apocalyptic vision, prophetic prediction, or something totally different? Poythress wants to make a distinction between what is intended as symbolic language and what is a description of a "straightforward historic event." Revelation 11:1-13 is first used as an illustration of how communication can take place at different levels. The author further interacts with views of premillenialism and Dispensationalism in general.
