Parallels: Use, Misuse, and Limitations

Parallels: Use, Misuse, and Limitations

  • Technical
  • Terry L. Donaldson

What is a proper use of comparative material in biblical studies? The article reflects upon the concept of "parallelomania," where scholars find supposed similarities in passages and then describe their source as if to imply a literary connection that flows in a predetermined direction. The author explains that true parallels should be distinguished from more than mere surface similarities, and he evaluates the use and limitations of parallels in the comparative study of religions.
