God's Law, "General Equity" and the Westminster Confession of Faith

God's Law, "General Equity" and the Westminster Confession of Faith

  • Technical
  • Harold G. Cunningham

This essay argues that according to the Westminster Confession of Faith, the Christian church's only obligation towards the Old Testament judicial laws is one of "general equity." However, opinions vary as to how these words must be interpreted in the context of the Reconstructionist movement (Theonomy debate). How was the term "general equity" used in terms of English Law and subsequently used by theologians? The author argues that the practical application of the concept is not without problems, but the conclusion is drawn that it can be used in the sense of being reasonable.
