The main purpose of this essay is to identify and indicate a number of negative elements in the hermeneutics of Latin American theologies of liberation. Latin American liberation theologies are not unified in approach; however, they share some general hermeneutical principles. Areas of examination include the prefacing of theological research with socio-economic analysis, the concept of a preferential option and privilege for the poor, universalism, the tendency toward an exemplaric exegesis of the biblical text, and experience as the criterion for evaluating truth.
