Revelation 21:3 - Society as Final Destination

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God."

Revelation 21:3

God’s tent, or rather his dwelling place, is among the people. God dwells there.

He is the Great One present! His glory shines on all sides. "Skene" means “tent,” "sjechina" refers God’s glory. Where God’s glory appears, that is where he dwells, where he lives.

The word "tent" indicates that this living together of God with his people shows what was ever exhibited in the tabernacle. The image of a tent speaks of a strong nearness and an intimate connection.

John was there during the transfiguration on the mountain, when Peter suggested that he should make three tents there. John now experiences the reality of what he was then not allowed to do. God lives permanently with his creatures. God’s tent is with the people and they will be his people. Here everything is being fulfilled. For ages, things have progressed toward this moment of, finally, glorious, delightful life — a new society that is completely focused on God.

To dwell is more than just to temporarily stay somewhere. Three times it sounds: God is with them, the highest measure of connectedness between God and people. God and people are now inseparable! Nothing can separate them from his love. The tabernacle as a tiny island of communion with God will be  completely overshadowed, overshadowed by the New World, which is full of the nearness of God. The sun is not needed, for God’s glory lights up the world. God lives permanently with his new world citizens. All peoples have been molded into one nation in the glorious presence of God. God himself will be with them — he himself in his Tri-Unity!

Death has no rights anymore; dying is past. And so is all misery which comes along with death.

Crying in fear has been replaced with God’s fire of love. All despair is banished. The struggles, that cause pain and sorrow are over and done. No Wailing Wall is needed anymore. God’s people are freed from loneliness forever for God’s intimate connection with them lasts into eternity.

God’s work trumps everything, everything that has happened up till now. His deeds are sublime. He has brought world history to a good end, to something decidedly new, gloriously new — to a communion so intimate and close as has never been experienced before, So visible, so tangible, so close.

There is nothing between God and his people, and nothing at all can come in between  — only the eternal difference between Creator and creature. After all, in the end, the definitive final destination is Society.
