A Conversation about Church Attendance

inside the church

In a previous article titled “Twice to Church,” I wrote about attending two church services each Sunday. I would now like to offer some practical questions on this subject, in the hope that they will be useful in providing a guide for conversation within the congregation and/or the study societies.

  1. Are we really focused on the fact that in our church services, we are meeting with the Lord?

  2. Are we truly convinced that the Lord calls us to church and that we go against his wishes when we neglect to attend?

  3. Do we know the joy of meeting with the Lord and of learning more about him? Or do we see it as an empty ritual, and find other things to be more enjoyable and relaxing?

  4. If we think that one church service per Sunday is enough, because it costs us too much, have we ever asked ourselves the question, “Enough for what?”

  5. How much insight do we have into our own sinfulness? Do we find the proclamation of grace to be a normal thing? Do we even see its relevance? Do we realize how much we need the impulses from above, and from our brothers and sisters, to fight against the degeneration of our souls and to bring forth fruit for the Lord?

  6. Does contentment with our own lives, and the enjoyment of our own circumstances make us less available for other matters, even for our own debts?

  7. Is it possible, that our refusal to make ourselves busy for the Lord, stems from a refusal to break free from a particular sin in our life?

  8. Does it makes sense that we, perhaps unconsciously, let ourselves be controlled by the need for a pleasant and exciting service, in which our feelings stand central, and in which everything is measured by our own experience and inner warmth? In our worship services, to what extent are joy and wonder fed and expressed by: Being allowed to appear before God's throne? Being allowed to listen to Him? Being focused on His grace? Being allowed to grow in Christ?

  9. Are there enough means being used for the processing of the preaching, and for the continuing work of the services during the rest of the week?
