The Central Sanctuary: Where and When?

The Central Sanctuary: Where and When?

What is the significance and intention of the call in Deuteronomy 12:5? How should readers understand this command and its application in the historical books of the Old Testament? This article argues that the Old Testament record is sufficiently clear and consistent, and that the traditional view adopted by Thompson, Craigie, Kitchen, and others has support from the ancient Near East. The article first examines the biblical evidence, which presents a consistent picture of the movement of the tabernacle from the wilderness to its placement at Jerusalem in Solomon’s day. It also presents a clear picture of the movement of the ark from the tabernacle to its installation in the newly completed temple. Attention is given to a survey of the Old Testament usage of the phrase "Name" of Deuteronomy 12:5, which is intimately associated with "the place which Yahweh will choose from among your tribes."

It is a great thing, this reading of the Scriptures! For it is not possible ever to exhaust the mind of the Scriptures. It is a well that has no bottom Chrysostom
