Stephanie Coontz, in a recent New York Times Op-Ed piece (July 5, 2005), made the point that conservative proponents of marriage have had a rough time lately. Facing pressure in this country by some states which have or may soon legalize same-sex marriages, traditional marriage advocates have also suffered defeats in countries such as Canada and Spain, where both recently passed legislation legalizing homosexual marriages.
