In a previous article all relevant references to tithing in Scripture were discussed and it was concluded that the continuation of a tithing requirement can not be adequately supported by the exegesis of individual texts. In the present essay the authors assess the applicability of tithing in light of pertinent systematic issues. They discuss the relationship between the Mosaic Law and the new covenant followed by an analysis and critique of larger systematic issues that have been used to argue for the continuation of tithing. The authors conclude with a survey of New Testament principles for giving and Christian stewardship. In the process attention is given to relevant texts like 1 Corinthians 9, 1 Corinthians 16, 2 Corinthians 8–9 and Philippians 4.
